WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TO REVISIT REDISTRICTING MAP

Washington County Commissioners will hold a special meeting Friday to act on submitting the county’s redistricting map.

After tabling the redistricting proposal at its meeting Tuesday, the court will meet Friday at 5:15 p.m. to take action on the matter.

According to Carli Koehne, Administrative Assistant to County Judge John Durrenberger, the deadline for the county to submit its redistricting plans is Saturday.

The item was tabled after a resident stated that with the proposed redistricting map, Blinn College’s Mill Creek Hall would be located within Precinct 1, while the rest of the campus would be in Precinct 4.  Commissioners agreed that moving the dorm into Precinct 4 with the full campus would make sense, but opted to table the item to give attorneys more time to review the changes.

Another proposed change to the precinct map takes land where Highway 290 meets Highway 36 South and shifts it to Precinct 4. (courtesy Washington Co.)

The county’s precincts would see two other adjustments, pending approval of the new map.  The first would take a tract close to where FM 2935 meets Little Sandy Creek from Precinct 3, covered by Commissioner Kirk Hanath, and move it to Precinct 1, under Commissioner Don Koester.  The second revision would move land near the meeting point of Highway 290 and Highway 36 South from Precinct 2, represented by Commissioner Candice Bullock, to Precinct 4, under Commissioner Joy Fuchs.

Every 10 years, census data is used to update district and precinct lines to reflect population changes.  Redistricting is required if there is a population deviation of over 10 percent between the largest and smallest districts or precincts.

Commissioners will hold another special meeting on Monday at 9 a.m. to canvass the votes for the constitutional amendment election on November 2nd.

Both special meetings will be held at the Washington County Courthouse.
