Washington County residents met today (Monday) to honor fallen military and service members during the Washington County Veterans Association’s (WCVA) Memorial Day program at Fireman’s Park.

Crowds filled the American Legion Hall for the WCVA’s first in-person Memorial Day gathering since 2019.

The featured speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Free, a Brenham native and 37-year Army veteran.  Free talked about why soldiers serve and discussed what their sacrifice means.

Free said Memorial Day is about remembering all those who have paid the ultimate price.

Free also said to not forget that work must still be done to truly ensure liberty and justice for all.

Local dignitaries and officials also addressed the crowd, including Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, Edna Mae Meyer of the Burton American Legion, and representatives of State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul.

The program recognized current and former members of the military throughout the event, which was presented by the combined veterans organizations in Washington County.

Free's full Memorial Day address can be heard below.
