MAGNOLIA WEST DEFEATS CUBETTES 5-4 ON SENIOR NIGHT
The Brenham Cubettes dropped a heartbreaker to Magnolia West 5-4 this (Tuesday) evening. Errors, wild pitches, and hit batsmen all figured into the victory for the Lady Mustangs.
Magnolia West scored their first run in the top of the first inning. Hailey Toney reached on a walk, and stole second. Ryleigh Nevarez followed with a single to left that was overrun by Kinley Antkowiak that allowed Toney to come around and score to make it 1-0 Lady Mustangs.
The score would stay that way until the fifth inning. Toney was hit by a pitch and Nevarez was intentionally walked. Jaycee Griffin ran for Nevarez. Alivia Kiser laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. Toney scored on a wild pitch by Della Jasinski to make it 2-0. Autumn Simmons followed with an RBI double that scored Griffin to make it 3-0 Magnolia West.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cubettes finally got on the board. Riley Meyer came up as a pinch-hitter and singled to center. Neveah Holmes ran for her. Antkowiak laid down a sacrifice bunt. Holmes stole third and then stole home for the first Brenham run to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Lady Mustangs added two more runs in the top of the seventh when Toney scored on a wild pitch, and and later in the inning, Peyton Crawley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Cubettes had one last chance to rally in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Antkowiak doubled, and came home to score on an RBI single by Stella Landry, Liliana Gonzales ran for her. McKenzie Tiemann was hit by a pitch. Avery Maurer then slugged a two-run triple to cut the lead to 5-4. However, Nevarez got Halle Scheel to flyout to center and seal the Magnolia West win.
Della Jasinski took the loss going seven innings, allowing three hits, five runs, four of which were earned, five walks, four hit batters, and 17 strikeouts.
Brenham now moves on to the finale game of the regular season on Friday night where they will travel to College Station for a 6:30pm game.
