SUSAN JENKINS RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE TO BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD

Trustee Susan Jenkins (center) reflects on her time
as a Brenham ISD trustee during the school board's
meeting on Monday.

Brenham ISD trustee Susan Jenkins was given special recognition by her fellow board members and the community Monday night.

Jenkins, who worked as an educator in Brenham ISD from 1981 to 2013, is not running for re-election to the board after serving as secretary for 10 years.  Those gathered at the meeting thanked her for her time in the school district and on the board.

Jenkins said she will be forever grateful for the time she has been able to give to students and the Brenham ISD family.

Board President Natalie Lange said Jenkins’ years of service as a teacher and board member are “unprecedented” and that it will be hard to imagine a board room without her.  Jenkins joked that she can always come back in the future as an audience member to speak during open session.

While the board will convene again prior to the May 6th election, Monday’s meeting was the last one before then to be held in the evening, as the next meeting on May 1st will be held at noon.

During Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin’s monthly report, he gave updates on the district’s new plans to bring transportation services in house and establish its own police force

Dr. Chaplin said Brenham ISD is reaching out to Longhorn Bus Sales and finalizing a lease purchase agreement for the bus fleet.  The district has also posted a position for director of transportation, and Dr. Chaplin hopes to bring that before the board in early May.

For the school police department, Dr. Chaplin said the district is working with a consultant through the steps involved in the process.  An application has been filled out and turned in to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), the governing body for police entities in Texas.  The district is also meeting with local law enforcement on jurisdictional understanding.

The board also went through an annual report of trustee continuing education hours and approved teacher contracts for the 2023-24 school year.
