BRENHAM CUBETTE VS LAKE BELTON SOFTBALL PLAYOFF PREVIEW

After a tough District 21-5A campaign, the Brenham Cubette Softball Team find themselves in the playoffs. Things do not get any easier though as they have to face one of the toughest teams in the state for their Bi-District round opponents, the Lake Belton Lady Broncos.

Della Jasinski (Mark Whitehead)

Brenham is 24-11 on the season. They finished 9-5 in district, which was tied for third with Magnolia. However, the Cubettes lost a one game playoff this past Monday, and so they dropped to the number four seed.

The Cubettes are led in the circle by junior right-handed pitcher Della Jasinski, who is in her third year at the varsity level. This season, she is 21-8 overall with a 2.30 ERA. She has struck out 234 batters in 167 1/3 innings pitched. She has committed to Texas A&M.

Avery Maurer (Mark Whitehead)

Offensively, leadoff hitter Avery Maurer has been the sparkplug for the team. The sophomore shortstop leads the team in most categories including a .461 batting average, a .551 on-base percentage, a .931 slugging percentage, six home runs, 59 runs scored, 47 total hits, 14 doubles, eight triples, and 20 walks. Maurer is also third on the team with 30 RBIs, and second in stolen bases with 42.

Junior First Baseman Kaylyn Rodriguez is having a breakout season with a .454 batting average, six doubles, two home runs, 42 RBIs, 37 runs scored, a .513 on-base percentage, and a .598 slugging percentage.

Junior Outfielder Halle Scheel is batting .355 on the season with 26 RBIs, 41 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, a .444 on base percentage, a .439 slugging percentage, and a team leading 54 stolen bases.

Sophomore Outfielder Sarah Mabie is hitting .350 on the season with 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 31 RBIs, a .404 on-base percentage, and a .600 slugging percentage.

Junior Third Baseman Annie Beckendorf has a .297 batting average with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, 18 RBIs, 21 runs scored, a .387 on-base percentage, and a .465 slugging percentage.

Meanwhile, Brenham will face a Lake Belton Lady Broncos team that is one of the top ranked teams in the state. They are ranked #9 in the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association poll and #8 at Maxpreps.com.

Lake Belton is 27-4 overall and finished 14-0 en route to winning the District 22-5A Championship. During that undefeated district run, they outscored their opponents 206-8.

They had finished as runner-ups in the Regional Championship games for the last two years in a row while still at Class 4A. Both times they lost to eventual State Champion Liberty. This is their first year in Class 5A.

The Lady Broncos' leading hitter is junior shortstop Casey Schultz, a Tarleton State commit, who has slugged 19 home runs this season.

Their pitchers are senior Zakayia Frederick, a Texas A&M International commit, and junior Shelby Schultz, who is also a Tarleton State commit. They are averaging giving up less than a run per game.

Due to rain in the forecast, the game start time has been moved up to 4pm at Caldwell High School. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 3:30pm.
