BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO SWEAR IN NEW MAYOR, COUNCILMEMBERS

The Brenham City Council will swear in new mayor Atwood Kenjura and three councilmembers at its meeting Thursday.

Kenjura defeated Keith Hofmann in the May 6th election to win the seat being vacated by Milton Tate, who did not run for another term after nearly 20 years as mayor.

In addition to Kenjura, receiving the oath of office will be new councilmember Dr. Paul LaRoche for Ward 3, Kenjura’s former seat on the council.

Albert Wright and Adonna Saunders will also be sworn in for new terms for Ward 2 and Ward 4 after running unopposed in the May 6th election.

After oaths are administered, the council will choose who will serve as mayor pro-tem.

In a work session, councilmembers will receive a presentation on guidelines for filming in Brenham.  City staff has discussed becoming certified as a Film Friendly Texas community by the Texas Film Commission.  The presentation will cover what steps a community must take in order to be designated as Film Friendly.

The council will then hold a public hearing and possibly act upon nominating Blue Bell Creameries to the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism division as a Texas Enterprise Zone project.  Blue Bell plans to invest over $10 million in capital improvements at its Brenham facility via new construction and facility and equipment upgrades.  Qualifying as an enterprise project would mean the company can receive reimbursement for the state portion of sales and use tax paid as a part of the business expansion.

In other business, the council will:

  • Accept a donation from the Fortnightly Club of Brenham for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library.
  • Accept a bid for air release valves on the raw water main.
  • Act on a resolution regarding policies and procedures required to be adopted by grant recipients for the award of the federally funded Texas Community Development Block Grant program related to street and drainage improvements to Carrington Lane.
  • Hold executive session discussion regarding Aviators Plus v. City of Brenham; cause no. 37896; 21st Judicial District Court, Washington County.  There will also be discussion regarding legal issues concerning the city’s Lake Somerville raw water intake structure, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and associated matters.

The council will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
