Citizens honored the sacrifices of fallen U.S. military and service members during today’s (Monday) Memorial Day service at the Brenham American Legion Hall.

The featured speaker for the program was U.S. Army veteran Christopher Johnson of Fulshear, who has served at military bases around the country and in Iraq and Afghanistan as a rifleman, rifle squad leader, sniper, long range marksmanship instructor, senior drill sergeant and career management non-commissioned officer.

Johnson reminded the public of Memorial Day’s true meaning: remembering those who have given all they can give.

Johnson also took time to honor the families who have lost husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and close friends.

Also speaking at the event were local officials and government representatives, including Washington County Judge John Durrenberger and Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura.  Words were also shared on behalf of Burton Mayor Karen Buck and State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.

The program was presented by the Washington County Veterans Association.

Johnson's full Memorial Day address can be heard below.
