NEW CENSUS NUMBERS SHOW POPULATION UP FOR BRENHAM & WASHINGTON CO., DOWN FOR BURTON
New census information shows Brenham’s increase in population has continued since the turn of the decade, but slowed over the course of July 2021 to July 2022.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s updated estimates, Brenham’s population as of July 1, 2022 was 18,469. That compares to 18,048 in July 2021 and 17,367 in July 2020, meaning the projected population grew by 681 from 2020 to 2021 and by 421 from 2021 to last year.
For Washington County, its population estimate as of last July was 36,159. That is an increase of 261 residents from July 2021’s population of 35,898, which itself was up by 93 from July 2020’s total of 35,805.
Burton’s projected population has declined from the tally of 294 residents in July 2020, dropping to 284 in July 2021 and to 280 in July of a year ago.
All area counties showed growth from July 2021 to the next July, but to varying degrees:
- Austin County – population of 30,421 in 2021, 31,097 in 2022.
- Brazos County – 237,583 in 2021, 242,014 in 2022.
- Burleson County – 18,110 in 2021, 18,657 in 2022.
- Fayette County – 24,669 in 2021, 24,913 in 2022.
- Grimes County – 30,106 in 2021, 30,754 in 2022.
- Lee County – 17,671 in 2021, 17,954 in 2022.
- Waller County – 59,474 in 2021, 61,894 in 2022.
New population estimates are released annually by the Census Bureau, with 2022’s figures being the latest.
