BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO VOTE ON SECOND SRO, SCHOOL BUDGET

The addition of a second School Resource Officer (SRO) and consideration of next school year’s budget lead a packed agenda for Tuesday’s Burton School Board meeting.

The board will act on an interlocal agreement with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to provide the new SRO.  The state now requires school districts to have an armed officer at every campus.

Burton ISD obtained its first SRO last year.  The district also utilizes the Guardian Program, permitting certain district employees to carry handguns on site.

Trustees are also expected to vote on the proposed 2023-24 budget.  The projected budget amount is $17.3 million, up from the previous amount of $15.9 million.

In addition, the board will potentially purchase two school buses, designate Washington County’s chief appraiser to calculate the district’s no-new-revenue tax rate and voter-approval rate, and approve a contract for assessment and collection services.

Other business will include adoption of the 2023-24 district, elementary and secondary campus improvement plans; updates to the Gifted and Talented plan; and discussion on the student and employee handbooks, student code of conduct and administrative procedures manual.

An executive session is scheduled to discuss personnel, confer with school district employees and go over district safety and security.

Also on Tuesday, the board will:

  • Hear monthly staff reports and an update on the bond project.
  • Vote on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) application.
  • Consider the 2023-24 amended calendar and teacher appraisal calendar.
  • Review Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) investment policy and consider TASB worker’s compensation coverage renewal.
  • Approve delegating contractual authority to the superintendent for the purpose of purchasing attendance credits, netting Chapter 48 funding.
  • Act on a board resolution extending the depository contract for funds.

The board will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Burton High School auditorium.
