BURTON SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES STAFF PAY RAISES IN BUDGET WORKSHOP

The Burton School Board met for over an hour in a budget workshop on Wednesday to hammer out the details of pay raises for Burton ISD employees.

Much of the meeting was spent discussing a prospective salary study to be conducted by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).  The study would provide the district with information on where its staff wages sit and where they should go.  However, according to Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy, the district will have to wait on doing the study if it wants to use the latest market data, impacting what the district can do with its pay structure now.

Dr. Kennedy also went over the initial proposal for staff pay increases, which total just under $200,000 for the district.

Trustee Jeff Harmel favored doing an equal raise for all employees, rather than the separated amounts given.  Dr. Kennedy said that change can be made.  Trustee Dean Fuchs said he wanted to see if hourly employees could be figured into the same salary step schedule that is used for teachers, because the hourly employees can get bypassed in years where raises are not given to everyone.

At the end of the workshop, trustees came to a consensus that they wish to have the exact number of employees that would get a raise, examine the cost options of implementing raises versus bonuses or stipends, and reach out to TASB to formulate a plan to have employee retention be factored into the increased pay.
