BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD TO VOTE ON BUDGET & TAX RATE, POTENTIALLY SELECT SUPT. SEARCH FIRM
The Brenham School Board will look to formally adopt a budget and tax rate and choose a firm to conduct the search for a new superintendent at its meeting Monday.
Currently, Brenham ISD is facing a $4.5 million deficit in the coming year’s budget. The tax rate proposed by trustees is $0.7683 per $100, with $0.6883 coming from maintenance and operations and $0.08 for interest and sinking. The rate is lower than the one adopted last year at $0.9346, but higher property values will lead to increased property tax revenue.
Adoption of the budget and tax rate will come after a public hearing.
Other items will include a presentation from Texans for Excellence in Education, an organization created as an alternative to the Texas Association of School Boards. There will also be a presentation on Brenham ISD website transparency and information on Faith Mission’s SMART CARE program. The consent agenda includes the approval of an interlocal agreement with the City of Brenham for school resource officer services.
Trustees will meet in executive session before re-opening open session to potentially approve a firm to lead the superintendent search. Current Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin plans to retire at the end of December.
The board will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in rooms 111 and 113 at Brenham High School. The meeting will be livestreamed on Brenham ISD’s YouTube channel.
I am sick of watching school boards waste money on executive search firms! Is it not a fact that the district employs a Human Resource Department? How about tasking the people we ALREADY PAY to do this work instead of paying yet another outside firm? Recruiting sources are pretty easy to find these days. Certainly, a bit of time and effort using internal resources would produce good candidates for such a high-paying prestigious job. It is poor management decisions like this one that cause our district to have an unbalanced budget.
The last two Superintendents were hired using the Texas Association of School Board’s executive search program. Neither lasted any length of time. And, the Texas Association of School Boards has hired a former BISD school board member to go to work for them. TASB only looks at what is best for TASB by putting its allies on school boards and in key district administration positions in order to keep taxpayer money flowing to TASB. Let’s hope that the current BISD board will show the ability to think for themselves and not hire TASB to tell them what TASB thinks is best for the district.
Agreed 100%
Understand this: Brenham ISD has lost some good veteran teachers to outlying districts not just because of better pay but because of poor personnel decisions. This district will continue to bleed teachers if the micromanaging and favoritism does not change.
Agree with ‘Not That Difficult’. Why do we have an HR department? Us them to collect resumes, filter out those that don’t meet specifications the board is looking for and narrow down to 10 or so for closer scrutiny.
How did that search firm work out last two times?
How about you open it up, pick your top ten based solely on past performance and NO other factors. Then, go meet some of the parents and staff, see how they feel about them.
Last and most important. No Wokes.
Just saved you another half-mil+ and a lot of hurt feelings.
We need to get someone who has Brenham in their best interest…someone that will value the teachers and students….someone who is actually going to do their job!!! Someone who will get rid of positions that are costing this district lots of money! Someone that is truly invested in Brenham!
Amen to that suggestion! However, the simple fact that it sounds like common sense assures me that it will not go down that way!
Typical Government run process…read an article that 67% of people don’t trust Government Schools…what the heck the other 32% thinking? By the way, Government CDC is pushing masks again…
No Wokes! What does this mean? Elaborate!
