A Brownsville man was arrested by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit on Sunday morning after a traffic stop uncovered cocaine.

According to Sheriff Keith Korenek, Sgt. Randy Thumann and his K9 partner Kolt stopped a 2015 GMC Yukon on I-10 at the 663 Mile Marker at 9:20am for a traffic violation.

After speaking to the driver, 31-year-old Jose Puentes, Sgt. Thumann observed discrepancies in his itinerary, route of travel, and many other familiar indicators of narcotics trafficking.

Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle, and deployed Kolt to conduct a sweep of the Yukon.  Kolt alerted Thumann to the presence of an illegal odor of narcotics emitting from the vehicle.

A search of the Yukon revealed an after-market compartment built under the center console.

After accessing the compartment, approximately five kilos of cocaine with a street value of $250,000 was discovered.

Puentes was arrested for Felony Drug Possession and was transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange.
