MAGNOLIA RALLIES TO DEFEAT CUBETTES 13-7 IN DISTRICT OPENER

Sarah Mabie (Mark Whitehead)

The Magnolia Lady Bulldogs took advantage of a nine-run sixth inning to come back and defeat the Brenham Cubettes 13-7 in their District 21-5A opener last (Tuesday) night.

The Cubettes got things started on a good note in the top of the first inning. Sarah Mabie hit a two-out single, and later came around to score on an RBI single by Kaylyn Rodriguez to put Brenham up 1-0.

Magnolia's Jade Bubke tied it 1-1 with a solo homer off Della Jasinski in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of third inning, Avery Maurer led off the inning with a double, and took third on an error. Mabie was hit by a pitch. Annie Beckendorf followed with an RBI single to score Maurer, and put Brenham back out in front 2-1. The inning ended on a controversial call. Kaylyn Rodriguez hit what appeared to be a sacrifice fly to score Mabie. However, Magnolia appealed, and the umpire ruled that Mabie had left the base too early, and she was called out, which resulted in a double play.

Magnolia would score three times in the bottom of the third inning. The big hits were an RBI single by Leah Hammack, and a two-run homer off of the scoreboard by Maci Franck, which put Magnolia up 4-2.

Brenham would cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Kylie Baker was hit by a pitch, and Nevaeh Holmes came into run for her. Holmes stole second, and then took third on a throwing error. McKenzie Tiemann reached on another Magnolia error, which allowed Holmes to come home.

The Cubettes re-took the lead 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Maurer reached on an error, and then road home on a two-run blast by Mabie.

Brenham would add another run in the top of the sixth inning. Holmes reached on an error, and came around to score on an RBI single by Stella Landry to make it 6-4.

Then came the bottom of the sixth inning, Magnolia took advantage of three Cubette errors, to go along with four hits, and couple of walks. They would send 13 batters to the plate and score nine runs to take a 13-6 lead.

Brenham came back with a run in the top of the seventh. Mabie reached on a fielder's choice, and then scored on an RBI double by Kaylie Rodriguez. Baker grounded out to third to end the game.

The Cubettes drop to 9-5 overall. They now get ready to host the Brenham Tournament on Thursday at Alumni Field. They'll face Shadow Creek at 11am and Forney at 5pm (4:35pm pregame on KWHI).
