BRIEF LOCKDOWN AT BRENHAM ECLC AFTER ‘LARGE TREE LIMB BREAKING’ NEAR CAMPUS MISTAKEN FOR SHOTS FIRED

The Brenham Early Childhood Learning Center was on lockdown for a short time this (Monday) afternoon after reports of possible shots fired, which turned out to be a large limb that broke off of a nearby tree.

Brenham ISD says it was notified around 2:15 p.m. of what were initially believed to be shots heard in the area surrounding the campus on Kerr Street.  Law enforcement responded to the scene, and the school temporarily restricted entry and exit from the building for approximately 15 minutes.

The district says investigation ultimately determined that the loud sound was caused by “a large tree limb breaking.”

The tree in question, according to Brenham ISD Communications Director Brooke Trahan, was by Kerr and Garrett Streets.

The district says the safety and well-being of students and staff are its top priority, and that at no point were they in any danger during this episode.

Below is a copy of the communication sent out by Trahan this afternoon:

I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred earlier today, March 4th, 2024, at approximately 2:15 PM near our Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC).

We received reports of what was initially believed to be shots heard in the area surrounding ECLC. In response, local law enforcement promptly intervened to investigate the situation. I want to assure you that at no point were our students or staff members in any danger.

As a precautionary measure, we initiated the Secure Response Protocol, which temporarily restricted entry and exit from the building. This protocol remained in effect for approximately 15 minutes while the situation was thoroughly assessed.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the sound reported was actually caused by a large tree limb breaking. Once again, I want to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. Your support is invaluable as we continue to prioritize safety measures within our school community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all.

  1. Another great afford by our Police officers, I was by ECLC, at 9:20 am and the tree limb was already down in the small park. I guess it took that long for the sound to reach the school across the street.
