Michael Henry Newman, the owner of Newman’s Bakery and Newman’s Castle in Bellville, has passed away at the age of 68.

Newman was born in Bellville on July 23, 1955, and died this past Wednesday. He was the oldest child of Henry and Rosiele "Rose" Newman.

Newman was a 1973 honor graduate of Bellville High School. After graduation, he traveled abroad and lived in several places including Spain and Italy, before returning home to Bellville.

In 1983, he opened Newman’s Bakery in a small location, and then as it grew, he purchased the former Superette building, where it still operates out of today.

Newman later fulfilled his next dream of building his own castle, which took around ten years to complete. He moved into the castle in 2007, and later opened it up to the public for tours.

Proceeding him in death were his father, Henry Newman, and his grandparents, Henry Oswell and Jennie Fisher Newman, and Joseph and Clara Pfeffer Wiktorik.

Survivors include his mother Rose Newman, a son, sister and brother-in-law Sherry and Brent Welty, nieces and nephews, Angela and Gunnar Kent, Ashley Welty and Chad and Amanda Welty.

The visitation for Michael Newman will be Tuesday from 9am-11am at the First Baptist Church of Bellville, with the funeral service to follow at 11am.

The graveside will be Tuesday at 2pm at the Good Hope Cemetery on William Penn Road in Washington, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Bellville or to the Good Hope Cemetery.
