BRENHAM ISD’S KASANDRA DAVIS NAMED ‘SUMMER HUNGER HERO’
Brenham ISD Child Nutrition Director Kasandra Davis has been recognized by a national anti-hunger nonprofit organization.
No Kid Hungry has named Davis a 2026 Summer Hunger Hero, one of ten honorees across the country being celebrated for going the extra mile in fighting to end childhood hunger.
Davis earned the award for creating a free summer meals distribution schedule that covers the entirety of students’ summer vacation, bridging the nutritional gap until the new school year starts in August. The non-congregate meal program has morning and afternoon pickup times and is accessible to all children 18 and under in the community, not just Brenham ISD students.
Teresa Contreras O’Reilly, program manager of No Kid Hungry Texas, said Davis “exemplifies the work of No Kid Hungry.” O’Reilly said, “She is out and about in the community doing what we work and advocate for. But she takes it to the next level. She goes above and beyond and it’s the kids that benefit. It’s always about the kids.”
Davis told KWHI earlier this month that the response to the summer meal program has been overwhelmingly positive and has led to the need for extra volunteers to package and distribute meals.
The summer meal distribution takes place every other Monday at Brenham Middle School, between the hours of 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 – 6 p.m. The next meal pickup is set for Monday, June 29th.
