CUBS LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT AS MAGNOLIA WINS 9-7

The Magnolia Bulldogs spoiled Youth Night with a 9-7 victory over the Brenham Cubs last (Tuesday) night at Fireman's Park.

Luke Hardy (Mark Whitehead)

Magnolia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Bret Petillo.

The Bulldogs got another run in the second inning following a controversial call. After hitting a lead-off double, Karson Dupre appeared to be picked off by the Cubs at second base. However, the home plate umpire, who was the furthest away from the play, overruled the second base umpire's out call even though he was right on top of the play. Dupre later scored the third run for Magnolia.

The explanation KWHI was later given is that the batter called timeout before the pickoff throw was made.

The Bulldogs added two more in the top of the fourth inning to put them ahead 5-0.

Brenham put their first two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Landry Mendoza drew a walk and Grady Gee reached on an error. Brayden Goss brought them both home with a two-run single to cut the lead to 5-2.

Magnolia tacked on four runs in the top of the sixth to increase their lead from 9-2.

The Cubs got one run back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Brady Rau that scored Mendoza to make it 9-3.

In the middle of the 7th inning, Brenham Head Coach Chase Wheaton was ejected by the home plate umpire after getting into a heated argument over several questionable calls that went against the Cubs throughout the game.

Wheaton was heavily cheered on by the Brenham crowd in attendance with one fan yelling, "You tell 'em, Coach!"

The ejection of their coach fired up the Cubs, as they nearly came back to win it in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Austin Maurer led off the inning with a single. Luke Hardy reached on an error by the Magnolia third baseman that also allowed Maurer to get to third. Maurer, then, scored on a balk by the Bulldog pitcher to cut the Magnolia lead to 9-4.

Grady Gee walked and Phillip Diehl singled. Two batters later, Kohring followed with an RBI single to score Hardy and make it 9-5.

Rau hit a two-run single to bring home Gee and Diehl to cut it to 9-7, but that would be as close as the Cubs would get.

The series now shifts to Magnolia on Friday night for a 7pm start time.
