CITY OF BRENHAM, UNITY THEATRE RECEIVE LCRA GRANTS

The City of Brenham and Unity Theatre have each received $25,000 grants from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) to put toward community projects.

The City of Brenham will use the grant, combined with $11,000 in matching funds from the city, to purchase two mobile electronic message boards that can be used during emergencies, disasters, bad weather and community events.

Meanwhile, Unity Theatre’s grant from LCRA and the city, along with $18,835 in matching funds from the theatre, will replace 22-year-old carpeting and seating to create a more comfortable and inviting atmosphere for guests.

City of Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau said the city currently works with other local agencies to share mobile message boards when needed.  He said many times they are short on the signs, particularly when multiple events are happening at the same time.  He said the city has a tight budget and a lot of needs, so it is nice to receive relief from a grant like this.

Unity Theatre Executive Artistic Director Kate Revnell-Smith said the new seating will have a contoured back for support and better functionality for visitors, along with more room for those who need to transfer to a theater seat from a mobility device.  She said the upgrades are long overdue and is thankful for the generosity from organizations like the LCRA and the community as a whole.

The community grants were two of 44 awarded recently through the LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program.  Applications for the next round of grants will open in July at https://lcra.org/cdpp.
