BURTON CITY COUNCIL HEARS RESULTS OF SOCIOECONOMIC SURVEY, APPROVES GRANT ITEMS

The Burton City Council on Tuesday accepted the results of a socioeconomic survey that will be used to help the city in paying for water system improvements.

Burton Mayor Karen Buck said the survey, conducted by Business Services Company in mid-April, collected 93 responses out of 127 occupied housing units for a total response rate of 73 percent.

The minimum response rate required by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) is 50 percent, so the city qualifies for debt forgiveness as it applies for grant funding with the TWDB for a water line replacement project.

According to the survey, the median household income in Burton is $35,000 per year, with an average of 2.35 residents per household.

Buck said the city will proceed with submitting a project information form to the TWDB.  City Secretary Angela Harrington said June 18th at 1 p.m. will be the due date for requests for qualifications (RFQs) for engineering services and requests for proposals (RFPs) for administrative services.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved several items regarding the Community Development Block Grant received from the Texas General Land Office.  Last month, the city was presented a check for $593,800 through the grant program that will go toward a new water well.

The items that were approved included ratification of the grant, a resolution regarding civil rights policies, designating authorized signatories, amendments for multiple contracts regarding the grant, and opening a new checking account for the grant funds.

The council also amended the Laas-Weeren Park rules adopted in a previous ordinance and affirmed another ordinance prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages on city property.

Oaths of office were administered to Tommie Gilmon, Jeff Eckhardt and Macey Tidwell, who were all unopposed in the May 4th election.  Paul McLaughlin was designated as the council’s Sargent-at-Arms, and Nathan Kalkhake will continue to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
