CUB FOOTBALL OPENS DISTRICT WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER WACO
The Brenham Cubs opened district play with a dominating 48-0 road win over the Waco Lions last (Friday) night.
The Cubs got the scoring started in the first quarter with C.J. Glover crossing the goal line on a seven-yard rushing touchdown, and then Cartelle Brown ran in the two-point conversion to give Brenham an 8-0 lead.
For their second scoring opportunity, the Cubs went into the playbook for some trickery. C.J. Glover threw a tailback pass, and Hagen Frank took it 69-yards to the end zone for a touchdown. Brenham went for two again, but this time they were not successful. However, the Cubs did extend their first quarter lead to 14-0.
Brenham found the end zone again in the first quarter as Xyran Upshaw scored on a five-yard run. Bleu Cienega added the extra point to give the Cubs a 21-0 advantage.
Upshaw opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chris Guidry. Cienega made the PAT to increase the Brenham lead to 28-0.
Glover would score next on a 22-yard touchdown run. Cienega stayed perfect on the extra points to make it 35-0 Cubs.
Brenham scored one more time before the half as Upshaw found Guidry on a 51-yard touchdown pass. Cienega added the PAT to give the Cubs a 42-0 lead going into the locker room.
Due to the lopsided score, they ran the continuous clock for the second half. Brenham's first drive of the third quarter ran off 11 minutes and 25 seconds of game clock. It ended on a 24-yard field goal by Cienega to make it 45-0 Cubs.
Cienega added another field goal of 24 yards in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring at 48-0 Brenham.
Upshaw finished with the best game of his career completing 14 of 21 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball six times for 37 yards and a touchdown.
Guidry finished with five catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns, all of which came in the first half.
Glover continued to shine with 21 carries for 107 yards, two touchdown runs, and a touchdown pass.
The Cub defense held Waco to just 64 yards of total offense. Trelyn Kelly and Rylan Lewis each had an interception in game.
Brenham is now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district. The Cubs will travel to Bryan next Friday for a district game against Rudder. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
