BRENHAM PARKS & RECREATION TO CELEBRATE ‘UNPLUG TEXAS DAY’ TUESDAY

Brenham Parks and Recreation invites community members to step away from their screens for the first Unplug Texas Day on Tuesday, October 21st.

The statewide observation was created by the Texas Recreation and Park Society and was officially recognized by the 89th Texas Legislature.  The public awareness campaign promotes the physical, mental and social benefits of parks, recreation and outdoor experiences.

City of Brenham Aquatic and Recreation Superintendent Tammy Jaster says Unplug Texas is about remembering that some of life’s most meaningful moments happen away from devices.  She encourages residents to reconnect with the spaces and activities that bring joy, health and connection.

As part of the event, Brenham Parks and Recreation will offer a variety of free, family-friendly activities, from swimming and aerobics classes at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center, to hiking and field goal challenges at Hohlt Park, to carousel rides and sand volleyball at Fireman’s Park.  The day’s events begin at 6 a.m. and continue through 6:30 p.m.

Free burgers and hot dogs will be served for lunch at Hohlt Park, while supplies last.

According to the Texas Recreation and Park Society, Americans spend more than seven hours a day in front of screens, and increased screen time has been linked to reduced sleep, higher anxiety and lower physical activity levels.

Residents can use the hashtag #UnplugTexas and tag @BrenhamParksandRecreation on social media to share how they unplug.
