FOOTBALL PREVIEW: CUBS VS. RUDDER

The Brenham Cub Football Team is off to a perfect start to the season. Last week, the Cubs (6-0, 1-0) opened District 10-5A Division II play with a 48-0 win over the Waco Lions.

This week, Brenham gets set to face off with the Rudder Rangers. Last year, the Cubs won 31-10.

So far, the Cubs average scoring 40.7 points per game, while giving up only 10.5 points per game.

Brenham is led by Senior QB Xyran Upshaw, who has completed 43 out of 74 passes for 855 yards with 11 touchdowns to just four interceptions, and a QBR rating of 115.7. Upshaw is also the second leading rusher on the team with 48 carries for 216 yards, an average of 4.5 yards per carry, and four touchdowns.

Junior Hudson Hartstack has seen time at QB as well. So far this season, he has completed 26 out of 45 passes for 412 yards with four touchdowns to just two interceptions.

The leading rusher is Sophomore RB C.J. Glover. He has carried the ball 86 times for 608 yards, an average of 7.1 yards per game, and eight touchdowns. Glover has also caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, plus he's even thrown a pair of touchdown passes.

The Senior WR duo of Chris Guidry and Cartelle Brown continued to be the catalysts for Brenham's air attack. Guidry has 31 receptions for 637 yards, which is good for an average of 20.5 yards per catch, and 12 touchdowns. Brown has caught 18 passes for 363 yards, an average of 20.2 yards per catch, and two touchdowns.

The Cub defense has been dominant holding opponents to 13 points or less in five out of their six games. Senior LB Caleb Espinoza leads the team with 35 tackles. Right behind him is Senior LB Kristian Prosper and Junior DT Job Rodriguez with 34 tackles each.

Senior DE Jase Mueller leads Brenham with five sacks to go along with 21 tackles on the season. Junior LB Brooks Roznovsky is second in sacks with three, and fourth in tackles with 29.

Meanwhile, for Rudder, they are currently 1-5 overall and 0-1 in district after last week's 58-3 loss to University High School. The Rangers are under new head coach Eric Ezar, who came over from Willis, and is attempting to rebuild the program.

Rudder's lone win came on September 26 when they beat Fort Bend Willowridge 24-21.

Head Coach Danny Youngs gave KWHI a scouting report on the Rangers.

Their passing leader is Junior QB Sylas Sullivan, who has completed 74 of 128 passes for 655 yards to go along with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Senior RB A.J. Morrison is the Rangers' leader in both rushing and receiving. He has 68 carries for 347 yards and nine touchdowns. He also has 27 catches for 283 yards and a touchdown.

Youngs discussed what the Cubs need to focus on.
