Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College Sports Information
The Blinn College women’s basketball team rolled to a 77-43 home win over Dallas College Cedar Valley on Wednesday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.
The Buccaneers earned a two-game season sweep of the Suns and improved to 5-4 overall.
After earning a 95-44 victory over Cedar Valley on Nov. 24 in Lancaster, Texas, Blinn faced a slightly tougher test in the rematch.
The Suns hung around through the first 20 minutes of play and trailed just 34-22 at halftime before the Bucs pulled away after the break.
“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we did the first time we played Cedar Valley, but we played hard and played good defense tonight,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “We still need to get better, and in games like this, we’re playing a lot of our players and letting our kids get some important playing time as we near the holiday break.”
The Bucs seized permanent control with the help of a 22-8 third quarter and carried a 56-30 cushion into the fourth.
Sophomore guard Jaya Gradney buried a driving layup with 1:05 remaining to close out the scoring and give Blinn its biggest lead of the game.
Although the Bucs didn’t record their best shooting performance, they still produced four double-digit scoring efforts.
Sophomore guard Mariah Houston paced the Bucs with 14 points. Sophomore guard Taylor Spencer followed with 13 points, freshman forward Amyah Weathersby chipped in 12, and freshman guard Mariah Davis tallied 11. Ten different players scored at least two points for Blinn.
“We’re going to keep working hard in practice, keep working on our shots, and using our defense to generate offense,” Spencer said. “We gain a lot of confidence from games like tonight, so I think we’re going to see that carry over into our remaining games before break.”
The Bucs’ season continues with the three-day Blinn Classic starting with a matchup against Western Texas College at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Kruse Center. Blinn then takes on Lone Star College-Tomball at 11 a.m. on Saturday and finishes the Classic against Western Gulf College at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
