BUCCANEER WOMEN OPEN THE BLINN CLASSIC WITH A WIN
Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College Sports Information
The Blinn College women's basketball team ran past Western Texas College 62-43 on day one of the Blinn Classic on Friday at the Kruse Center in Brenham.
The victory was the Buccaneers' third in a row as they improved to 6-4 overall.
Blinn controlled the action from start to finishing, outscoring the Westerners in all four quarters, including a 21-5 advantage in the first.
Although the Bucs won comfortably, head coach Jeff Jenkins said he'd still like to see better play from his team as they near the holiday break.
"We struggled tonight offensively with missed shots and turnovers," Jenkins explained. "Defensively, we played well in segments but then had stretches where we'd give up open 3-pointers because of defensive lapses. It's great to get the win, but we still need to get better on both sides of the court."
After building a 16-point lead in the first 10 minutes of play, the Bucs took a 35-21 cushion into halftime and were ahead 48-32 after three periods.
Sophomore guards Mariah Houston and Jasey Campbell paced Blinn with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman forward Amyah Weathersby finished with nine points, sophomore guard Taylor Spencer tallied eight, and sophomore forward Cynthia LeCompte added seven.
Blinn faces Lone Star College-Tomball on day two of the Classic at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
