BLINN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CRUSHES COASTAL BEND 93-43 IN FINAL EVER MEETING
Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College Sports Information
The Blinn College women’s basketball team closed out its regular season in a big way Wednesday.
The Buccaneers controlled the action from start to finish and rode a 31-point first quarter to a dominant 93-43 Regionals 14 road win over Coastal Bend College in Beeville, Texas.
Up next, Blinn (18-12, 8-6 region) will enter the Region 14 Tournament, but is awaiting other region results to determine its seed.
The Bucs will head into the postseason with some momentum after completing a regular-season sweep of the Cougars.
Blinn built a 31-7 cushion after the opening 10 minutes and pushed its advantage to 53-20 by halftime.
“It was really fun to see us finally shoot the ball well,” Bucs head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “All 11 of our players who suited up and played got in the scorebook.”
Blinn was ahead 72-24 at the end of the third period.
The Bucs knocked down 16 3-pointers, led by four from Taylor Spencer. The sophomore guard paced Blinn with 21 points.
Sophomore guard Mariah Houston hit three triples en route to a 15-point night. Freshman forward Kamaria Ford added 13 points, and sophomore forward Cynthia LeCompte added 10 points. Freshman guard Mariah Davis chipped in nine points on three treys.
Blinn's victory could very well be its last against the Cougars. Coastal Bend voted in January to disband its men's and women's basketball programs, as well as its volleyball program. Blinn is 25-1 against the Cougars since Nov. 9, 2013.
The Region 14 tournament begins Wednesday, March 11, on the campus of Lee College in Baytown, Texas. Matchups and game times have yet to be determined. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth for the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship tournament on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La.
