CUB BASEBALL SPLITS GAMES ON DAY TWO OF THE ALUMNI TOURNAMENT

The Brenham Cub Baseball Team split their games on the second day of the Brenham Alumni Tournament.

First up, was a matinee game against former district foe, Magnolia West. The Mustangs scored two runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Sterling Scheffer to take an early lead.

Brenham came back in the bottom of the first. Dalton Hart led it off with a double, Owen Finke walked, and Drake Bentke launched a three-run homer over the centerfield fence. For Bentke, it was his fourth homer of the tournament. The Cubs were suddenly in front 3-2.

After a scoreless second inning, Magnolia West's offense erupted for seven runs in the top of the third to take a 9-3 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Bentke reached on a fielder's choice. Ethan Aschenbeck and Luke Hardy drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bleu Cienega singled home Bentke. Brooks Roznovsky followed with a two-run single to score Aschenbeck and Hardy. Then, Landry Mendoza singled home Cienega, and the Mustang advantage was down to 9-7.

The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth inning, when Magnolia West added three more runs to take a 12-7 lead.

Brenham got one of the runs back on a solo homer by Luke Hardy in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-8, which would end up being the final score.

The Cubs rounded out the tournament last (Friday) night with a 9-6 victory over the Robstown Cottonpickers.

Robstown got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning.

Brenham responded with four runs in the bottom the first inning. Owen Finke drew a walk, and Drake Bentke doubled him home to tie the game at 1-1. Luke Hardy singled in Bentke to put Brenham in front 2-1. Hardy went to second on a passed ball, and then scored when Bleu Cienega reached on an error by the third baseman. On that same error, Cienega managed to circle the bases and score to make it 4-1 Cubs.

In the second inning, Brenham added three more runs. Hart and Finke both drew walks to lead off the frame. Bentke singled in Hart to increase the lead to 5-1. Aschenbeck reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Hardy hit into a fielder's choice as the Cottonpickers threw home to get Finke at the plate. Cienega hit into another fielder's choice that allowed both Bentke and Aschenbeck to score. That gave the Cubs a 7-1 lead.

Brenham added another run in the third inning when Landry Mendoza was walked, and then came around to score on a passed ball. That increase the Cubs' advantage to 8-1.

Robstown scored their second run in the game in the top of the fourth inning, which made it 8-2.

Brenham obtained their final run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mendoza singled, and later came around to score on an RBI groundout by Bentke. That increased the lead to 9-2 Cubs.

The Cottonpickers came up with four runs in the sixth inning to trim the Brenham lead to 9-6. Jaseton Bolcerek shut Robstown down in the seventh inning to seal the win.

Hudson Hartstack was the winning pitcher after turning in a solid outing going five innings, allowing just one earned run, and striking out nine.

The Cubs will start district play this week with two games against the College Station Cougars. They will be in Brenham on Tuesday night at 7pm, and then in College Station on Thursday night at 7pm. KWHI is going to have live coverage of both games beginning with the pregame at 6:35pm on both nights.
