CUB BASEBALL RALLIES TO WIN DISTRICT OPENER OVER COLLEGE STATION 7-3

The fans at Fireman's Park got their money's worth last (Tuesday) night as the Brenham Cub Baseball Team rallied to defeat the College Station Cougars 7-3 in the District 17-5A opener.

The Cubs got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning. Dalton Hart led it off with a single, and then Owen Finke crushed a two-run homer to give Brenham a 2-0 lead.

After that, Cub pitcher Luke Hardy and Cougar pitcher Jake Bogan locked into a pitcher's duel with both putting up multiple zeroes on the scoreboard.

Hardy had a stretch where he struck out seven batters in a row and eight out of nine. That occurred during a stretch where he retired ten straight batters.

College Station broke through with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The key hit was a two-run double by outfielder Landon Hawkinson.

Brenham bounced back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Drake Bentke led off the inning by drawing his third walk of the game. Two batters later, Hardy also drew a walk at the plate. Brooks Roznovsky came up as a pinch hitter for Bleu Cienega, and reached on an error to load the bases. Caleb Maurer was brought in to run for Bentke, while Cienega re-entered the game to run for Roznovsky. Brody Tucker put the Cubs back in front with a two-run single that scored Maurer and Hardy that made it 4-3 Brenham.

Nate Rau came in to run for Tucker. Brayden Steele reached on a fielder's choice, and Landry Mendoza walked to load the bases. Dalton Hart would then clear off the bases with a three-run double, and put the exclamation point on the game as the Cubs took the lead for good, 7-3.

Keim retired all three batters that he faced in the seventh inning to preserve the win.

The Cubs and the Cougars will face each other again tomorrow (Thursday) night in College Station. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:35pm, followed by the first pitch at 7pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
