CUB BASEBALL SWEEPS COLLEGE STATION WITH A 9-2 WIN

For the second straight season, the Brenham Cub Baseball Team has swept the two-game District 17-5A series over the College Station Cougars. After getting a 7-3 victory on Tuesday, the Cubs continued their winning ways with a 9-2 victory last (Thursday) night in College Station.

It all began in the top of the first inning. Dalton Hart led it off with a single, Owen Finke drew a walk, and Drake Bentke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ethan Aschenbeck drew a bases loaded walk that scored Hart for the first run of the game. Luke Hardy followed by hitting a sacrifice fly that brought home Finke to give Brenham an early 2-0 lead.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the third inning when the Cougars put a pair of runs on the scoreboard. Keaton Johnson reached on an error, and Blaise Sanger drew walk. On another Cub error, Johnson scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Two batters later, Tyler Bendfield hit an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the top of the fifth inning when the Cubs jumped back out in front. With one out in the frame, Finke walked, and Bentke singled. Finke later scored on a wild pitch, and Bentke would come home after College Station pitcher Myles Simpson was called for a balk. That gave the Cubs a 4-2 lead.

Brenham put the game away with five runs in the top of the ninth as College Station pitchers struggled with their control by issuing four walks and hitting a batter. Bentke got it started with a walk. It was the fourth straight time he reached base. (He had been hit by a pitch and singled twice.)

Later in the inning, Bleu Cienega and Brody Tucker both walked to load the bases. Caleb Maurer entered the game as a courtesy runner for Tucker. Brooks Roznovsky drew a bases loaded walk that scored Bentke to make it 5-2 Brenham.

Landry Mendoza followed with a two-run single to score both Cienega and Maurer to make it 7-2 Cubs. Hart was hit by a pitch to get on base, and then Finke capped off the scoring with a two-run double to score Roznovsky and Hart to push the advantage to 9-2.

Brayden Steele got the start and pitched the first five innings to get the win. Dawson Keim pitched the final two innings to get the save.

Next up, the Cubs will face the Lake Creek. They will be at Lake Creek on Tuesday, March 17, and the Lake Creek comes to Fireman's Park on Friday, March 20.
