BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON ORDERING RUNOFF ELECTION

The Burton City Council will meet on Tuesday to take the next steps to resolve a tie in two of the three races in the May election.

City Secretary Amanda Klehm said the Washington County Elections Office conducted a post-election hand count audit on Friday, and the results stand as previously released.

For Council Position #2, incumbent Tommie Gilmon and challenger Sheila Ripple both received 66 votes.  For Council Position #5, incumbent Macey Tidwell and challenger Berneake Gantt each tallied 65 votes.  The race for Council Position #3 saw challenger Charly Ruemke defeat incumbent Jeff Eckhardt, 73 – 55.

On Tuesday, the council will consider votes on canvassing the election results, administering the oath of office to Ruemke, ordering an automatic recount of the election results, and ordering a runoff election.  It will also appoint members to serve as mayor pro tem and sargent-at-arms.

After the election-related business, councilmembers will act on a contract with Aoka Engineering to review Burton ISD’s 2021 plans related to fire suppression requirements and evaluate the city’s water infrastructure capacity to support the proposed system.

The council will also look to approve a resolution authorizing submission of an application through the Texas Water Development Board for a water and infrastructure grant.  Later, it will vote to designate the authorized signers for all bank accounts for the City of Burton at Citizens State Bank and allow the city secretary to call and contact the bank regarding information on the bank accounts.

The council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
