The City of Navasota says the René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle monument is back on Washington Avenue after it had to be removed, following a small truck hitting the monument in December. The granite base of the monument shifted, and the outer edges and corners were damaged.
The city worked with Watson Monument Company, who took the statue from its base in March and transported it to its facility in College Station to perform over six weeks of restoration work. The granite base received repairs at a specialized restoration facility in Georgia.
The La Salle statue was reset on its restored base on Wednesday. A specialized adhesive was applied during the installation and will require several days to fully cure. Watson Monument Company will return tomorrow (Friday) to make the final finishing touches.
The city plans to hold a re-dedication ceremony for the monument later this summer, and will announce more details as plans are finalized.
