THE SPECTATOR – “MAIFEST FROM THE VAULT” AT BARNHILL CENTER
The Brenham Heritage Museum has put together an incredible display of Maifest artifacts from as long ago as the 1930’s. Titled “Maifest from the Vault”, the display inside the Barnhill Center in downtown Brenham is open to the public today, Saturday and next Tuesday from 1:00 ‘til 5:00 each afternoon. Besides trains and mantels from Maifest kings and queens from eras gone by, the exhibit also has pieces of a 1930 Maifest float! It’s definitely worth your time to visit The Barnhill Center to see some of the history of Maifest, which celebrates its 128th year this weekend. Plus, you get to see the beautifully restored Simon Theater. Whether or not if you ever spent a Saturday afternoon or evening watching the latest Hollywood movies at the Simon, everyone needs to see how the old theater has been transformed and restored to its original beauty. The Barnhill Center, including the Hasskarl Auditorium and the Bullock Ballroom, are wonderful additions to Brenham’s historic downtown area, and something we should all be proud of. If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of the special events or concerts or even a movie at The Barnhill Center, do it! They even serve drinks….so you don’t have to hide your Schlitz can in your boot like we did in the 70’s. Now I’ve read comments from people saying “why pay $10 to see a movie that’s free on TV?”. Trust me when I tell you it’s not anywhere near the same experience as you’ll have at the old Simon Theater. Take your kids or grandkids to a movie and tell them about what it was like when you were their age. Your next chance to do just that is coming up June 8th and 9th during Totally 80’s Movie Weekend at The Barnhill Center. Who doesn’t want to see “Pretty in Pink”, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Footloose” again on the big screen! And that’s the way it looks to this Spectator.
