NAVASOTA CITY OFFICIALS SPEAK ON BUDGET DEFICIT OF NEARLY $1 MILLION

Early budget projections show the city of Navasota facing a budget deficit of almost $1 million.

City Manager Brad Stafford says there’s no cause for alarm, and that the numbers are not indicative of a final budget.  He says the city plugs in all requests the city receives, projects costs, and places them into preliminary budget projections, to show citizens that their requests are being heard, but may not be addressed.

Stafford, along with Mayor Bert Miller, says the city is still in the process of hearing all requests and accounting for revenue streams.  Stafford says the city has experienced a growth in housing, so he expects additional utilities revenue.

The city is attempting to determine why its sales tax revenue has dropped this year.  Officials have asked the State Comptroller to look at the city’s sales tax numbers.  In 2016, the city was forced to reduce staff after oil and gas revenues dropped.
