BURTON BRIDGE MINISTRY IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE MASKS, DONATE MATERIALS
The Burton Bridge Ministry is looking for volunteers in its effort to provide free cloth masks to anyone in the community.
Bridge Ministry President Madeline Johnson announced Tuesday the ministry is seeking volunteers to sew cloth masks and donate materials, in order to add another layer of protection against the spread of COVID-19 in the community. She asked anyone who has a surplus of masks available to consider donating them for re-distribution.
Johnson said mask makers can use their own design if they prefer, but said the ministry’s preferred design can be found at https://www.gfclinic.com/approved-pattern-info-for-homemade-masks. She said the design is ideal because:
- It allows the user to insert barrier material, such as a HEPA filter or any type of non-porous material. Johnson said disposable shop towels cut to size work well.
- It uses a twist tie, pipe cleaner, or similar thin piece of wire to allow the user to adjust the top to fit over the nose more securely.
- The mask can be made with ties or elastic. Johnson said finding ¼” elastic has become difficult, so the tie option is nice to have.
- The website directs to two different videos that illustrate how to make the mask.
Those that are unable to sew but do have materials are asked to donate:
- ¼” elastic
- 2” binding tape
- Cotton fabric with a close weave (quilting fabric works well). Johnson said scraps also work well, provided the scrap is at least 20” x 20”.
- Interfacing (some patterns call for interfacing).
Anyone with masks or materials for making masks is encouraged to call the ministry’s office at 979-337-3370, or go online to www.burtonbridgeministry.org.
