TxDOT TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON HIGHWAY 290 IMPROVEMENTS IN WASHINGTON, WALLER COUNTIES

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS WOULD OCCUR BETWEEN FM 1371 AND HIGHWAY 6

A virtual public hearing is slated to begin next month to discuss improvements to a stretch of Highway 290 in Washington and Waller Counties.

TxDOT has sent out public notice of a virtual meeting to be opened July 21st, concerning improvements on the highway from FM 1371 near Chappell Hill to Highway 6 near Hempstead.

The meeting will open at 5:30 p.m. on the 21st and will close at midnight on August 5th.  It will consist of a pre-recorded presentation by the project team, project exhibits and other information, and will allow an opportunity for comment.

The project extends a total of ten miles along Highway 290 from FM 1371 to Highway 6.  The proposed improvements would include a six-lane roadway with three 12-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction, 12-foot-wide inside and outside shoulders, and a median varying from 20-28 feet wide.

Currently, the highway consists of two 12-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction with outside shoulders varying from 4-12 feet in width.  The grass median varies from 32-102 feet in width, and existing right-of-way varies from 200-500 feet in width.

For Washington County, the additional lanes would be constructed within the existing median and outside ditch of Highway 290, while in Waller County the additional lanes would be built within just the current median.

The project would take place within the existing right-of-way on Highway 290.  An additional 29.4 acres of right-of-way would be needed for proposed detention ponds.  No displacements are expected.

To log onto the virtual meeting, visit www.txdot.gov and keyword search US 290.  Those without internet access can call 713-802-5358 to ask questions about the project and access project materials at any time during the project development process.

  1. This is a much needed project, but raises a question. What about the stretch from Harris County line (ie, Buc-ees) to Hwy 6 (ie Hempstead)? That has even more traffic than this stretch discussed in this article. I would do that first, THEN do this one.

    1. I agree. We drive this route several times a month and the 362/Buc-ees to Hwy 6 portion of 290 is very congested and heavily traveled. Solve problem A before solving problem B.
