WASHINGTON CO. OFFICIALS DISCUSS IMPACTS OF 87TH LEGISLATURE AT TAC CONFERENCE

Several Washington County officials met earlier this month to discuss the 87th Legislative Session and its impact on county government.

Commissioners Joy Fuchs and Candice Bullock, County Attorney Renee Mueller and County Treasurer Peggy Kramer were some of the more than 850 county officials who gathered either in person in Austin or virtually September 1-3 at the Texas Association of Counties’ (TAC) 2021 Legislative Conference.

During the conference, participants received an analysis of the 87th Legislature and discussed common concerns shared by county governments and local taxpayers.

TAC Executive Director Susan Redford said the conference gives county officials from around the state “the chance to get together as peers and as community leaders to discuss potential solutions to our shared challenges.”

Sessions in this year’s hybrid event included discussion on COVID-19’s effect on elections, criminal justice, redistricting, property tax reform and broadband expansion.

Evan Smith, CEO and co-founder of The Texas Tribune, delivered the conference’s opening keynote address.  The closing session focused on the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and the county budgeting process.  Texas counties will receive $5.7 billion in direct payments from the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds established by the plan.
