The museum is slated to hold the grand reopening of the historic Post Office building on Thursday, November 17th.  This is the first phase of the museum’s reopening plan after it closed in August 2017 due to safety concerns prompted by flood damage in May 2016.

Brenham Heritage Museum Executive Director Mike Vance says construction has been ongoing since May 2021, and the museum is now at the point where the main floor will be turned over this week, with the basement not far behind.  Construction is expected to be complete by the end of this month.

Vance says there will be eight major exhibits on display come November, with many references to the history of the Post Office building.

In addition to the major exhibits, there will be rotating exhibits, a gift shop and two theatre spaces, including a video jukebox that will allow the user to watch over 100 historic short films.  The museum is working with Core Design Studio of Houston to create the exhibits.

Vance says the museum greatly appreciates the support of the community, and that this effort would not be possible without their backing.

Exhibits for the museum will be rolled out in three phases.  As funding comes in, the museum will create additional kiosks and elements, with future plans for exhibits including Washington County social life, European immigration, local schools and churches, and area sports.  Vance says these will be rolling additions to the museum over the next year or so.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on November 17th.  The first three hours of operations will be reserved for museum members.  Admission to the general public will open at 1 p.m.  Hours will be from Wednesday through Saturday.

Admission to the museum will be $5 for the public and free for museum members.  Memberships last one year, and can be purchased at any time.
