The “A Century of Simon” exhibit will reopen with a reception on Friday, October 24th from 4 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided, as well as period music by Jack Carr.
The exhibit highlights the history of the Simon Theatre dating back to 1881, when the Simon family entered the entertainment business. It features information on the Simon’s early vaudeville days, Hollywood’s Golden Era, movies and events over the decades, its eventual decline and – ultimately – its revival.
A new book on the theatre’s history, authored by Sharon Brass, will also be available. Brass will be onsite to sign books and answer questions about the Simon Theatre, along with other Simon experts and researchers. After the reception, books will be available at the Washington County Visitor Center and at events hosted by The Barnhill Center.
On Saturday, October 25th at 7 p.m., Gunhild Carling will perform music from early Simon eras. Known for her ability to play multiple instruments, Carling’s vintage style goes back to the days of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and other old-time favorites. She is often featured with big bands, symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, and as a diva vocalist with Postmodern Jukebox. The history exhibit can be toured before and after the show.
The Barnhill Center Manager Alexandra Dill says, “This will be a weekend for Brenham to celebrate the Simon and create new memories there.” She also says the live concert will be “an exciting grand finale for the Simon’s birthday year.”
The exhibit’s regular schedule will be Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will remain open through Friday, November 21st.
