The Burleson County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update regarding the arrest of two parents last week for Injury to a Child.

Deputies were dispatched on Wednesday, October 21, around 10pm for a report of an infant choking on an object lodged in her airway.

The child was stabilized and transported by AirMed to Scott and White Hospital in Temple in critical condition.

While on the scene, Deputies observed several signs of severe, potentially life-threatening injuries to the child’s body. A large contusion to the side of the head, multiple bruises and insect bites across the child were documented.

Burleson County Investigators later arrested the parents, 21-year-old Joel Reyes and 24-year-old Maria Nava on charges of Severe Bodily Injury to a Child (1st Degree Felony), and Child Endangerment (State Jail Felony).

In an update this (Tuesday) morning, the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office said that both parents have received additional charges of Injury to a Child after investigators presented additional warrants to a judge.

The father, Joel Reyes, also received charges for Retaliation. Both remain in custody at the Burleson County Jail. Current bond totals are $230,000 for Reyes and $200,000 for Nava.

In addition to that, an Emergency Protective Order has been put in place to safeguard the child.

The grandfather, 40-year-old Jose Reyes, was arrested on Friday, October 23, for Child Endangerment, Failure to Report Felony Serious Bodily Injury, and Violation of Bond/Protective Order. His bond totals are $20,000.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Sheriff’s Office also gave an update on the child’s condition. The infant remains at Baylor Scott & White in Temple.

Medical staff report significant improvements toward recovery, though the road ahead is expected to be long. Multiple brain bleeds have been contained, and the child is said to be conscious and alert.

Several deputies and investigators have visited the hospital over the past several days, including Sheriff Bill Rios.

In a statement on the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, they said, “The child is in everyone’s thoughts here at the Sheriff’s Office, we ask the communities of Burleson County to pray for her recovery and brighter days ahead.”
