WEBSTER ELECTED TO STATEWIDE VETERANS POST
Cecil R. Webster of Carmine in Fayette County has been elected as chairperson of the Texas Democratic Veterans. The election was held during the state Democratic convention in San Antonio on June 17, 2016. Webster is also a candidate for state representative of house district 13 (Austin, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lavaca, and Washington counties) in the November elections.
The Texas Democratic Veterans is a statewide organization chartered with identifying and advocating veterans’ issues at the local, state and federal levels of government, promoting veteran programs in the private sector, and advocating for strong military defense policies. It is composed of veterans and their supporters from all five branches of the military – Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
Webster, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army with 26 years of active duty, released the following statement after his election:
“I am humbled to lead this veterans’ organization. Given that only a small number of our elected leaders – at any level – have any direct military experience, an organization such as this is critical to ensuring that our veterans receive the support they deserve for the service they provided to our nation. And even though for historical reasons ‘democratic’ is an integral part of the organization’s name, our focus is on all veterans for there are no democrats or republicans when bullets are flying. I look forward to leading and managing this statewide organization, and in working with other similar organizations like the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Vietnam Veterans of America, in a united effort to ensure we support of our veterans, those from World War II through the current war in the Middle East. While support for all veterans is crucial, I am particularly concerned about the needs of our veterans who have served or are serving in our longest running war ever. As one politician said, ‘if we can send them to war, then we can provide them the benefits they require after they come home’.”
