DOWNTOWN BRENHAM TO HAVE ‘SUNDAY FUNDAY’ EACH MONTH
A new entertainment event has started in downtown Brenham, happening on the first Sunday of each month.
“Brenham First Sunday Funday!” launched on April 2nd, bringing several hundred visitors to enjoy live music, shopping, family activities and special menus at several eateries.
“After recent surveys of hoteliers, restaurants and tourist attractions, we learned that the top request from tourists is for more things to do on Sundays,’” said Page Michele, president/CEO of Washington County Chamber Convention & Visitors Bureau.
"Brenham First Sunday Funday!" was organized by Home Sweet Farm Market, Ninety Six West, BT Longhorn Steakhouse & Saloon, Roux Street and Brazos Valley Brewing Company.
They plan to continue indefinitely, on the first Sunday of each month, providing several bands and family entertainment.
This Sunday musical entertainment includes:
- 1:30 Comin' Up Muddy at Home Sweet Farm Market
- 2:00 Art Wozniak at Brazos Valley Brewing Company
- 2:00 The King Bees at Roux Street
- 4:00 Aaron Neil Loesch at Home Sweet Farm Market
- 4:00 The Blue Grooves at Ninety Six West
- 6:30 The Mighty Orq at Home Sweet Farm Market
There will also be food trucks at Brazos Valley Brewing Company. BT Longhorn Steakhouse & Saloon will feature a Bloody Mary & Mimosa bar, a DJ with continuous music, and a children's bouncy house. Home Sweet Farm Market will host face painting, caricatures, a artisan & farmers market, Whitehurst Heritage Farms eggs, poultry and pork.
Ninety Six West will hold a Sunday brunch and an evening crawfish boil. Roux Street will have a fish fry, as well as fresh oysters on the half-shell.
The Dawn of Washington County, a 25-minute movie, will show at The Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre at noon and 1 p.m. There will also be tours of the restored theatre.
“The Downtown shopping experience on 'Brenham First Sunday Funday!' is more robust than normal Sundays,” said Jennifer Eckermann, manager of Main Street Brenham.
“The additional businesses open on May 7th are: Back Lot Gallery, Bluebird Off The Square, Branded Boutique, Brenham Book Nook, Brenham Grill, Canyon Chick, Dona Lynn’s Unique Gifts, fancy that!, Hermann Furniture, JR’s Antiques & Collectibles, Lolli & Dauts Boutique, Must Be Heaven, Puppy Dawgs & Cat Tails, Ranch Interiors, Smitty’s Café and Bakery, the Visitor Center, Today and Yesterday and The Woman’s Cave.”

I think it would be nice to have those downtown shops opened in the evenings. It would be nice to walk around when its not too hot and enjoy food and drinks. I think that’s what we need. It’s so pretty at nights when the lights are all on. I would come and shop in the evenings.
Joyce, when will the stores come? Do you know something, we locals don’t ? We have been hearing for at least 20 years about all the new stores that will be coming to Brenham for us to shop including the store you say we are craving for, the Target ! How about another major grocery store, department stores, such as Belk or a Kohl’s, a Bed Bath & Beyond, Michaels or Hobby Lobby, stores that we can purchase things for our homes and clothes we can wear, that is what we are talking about Joyce. And guess what Joyce, I went to Bryan College Station this morning with a list and found all but 2 things and those will be ordered online, because none of the items could be found here in Brenham. And Tom I know that the activities are for everybody, not just visitors and tourists and it will be a very nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon if one chooses to go, but even you, someone who was born and raised here in Brenham knows the limitations that we have for shopping and I am sure that even you go out of town to shop.
You are correct. But if you go back and read our story, it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of these posts. This event is put on by local business owners trying to make our community better. The City has nothing to do with it. I’m not disagreeing with the comments. Just pointing out that they are posted in an odd place.
Lifetime resident, as I am, agree. I shop elsewhere often or online. I have spoken with Kroger corporate and they will not bring us a store until the median blue collar wage is at a respectable level. So council and commissioners, industrial board, stop placating and controlling the wages and your sales tax revenue will increase when we have places to shop. Maybe then you can roll back our property taxes. The wage control has stifled this community for years, this practice must stop or our youth will continue to leave in masse.
I think this is a great idea and necessary for Brenham. Not saying Target or some other big stores should not come along on 290, but the town is historic, adorable, and the local businesses do need tourism which is good for Brenham.
Locals, can’t we just get along and have a vibrant alive historic downtown as well as the targets you crave for shopping? They will come, don’t worry.
I completely agree with lifetime resident!! We are expected to shop local yet we have no realistic options to shop local! For the size of Brenham and exposure to a major highway we have no major stores such as target, Kroger, Academy. Wake up Brenham and start opening your eyes to what Brenham needs!
More stuff for the “Tourists ” ! How about getting some things for the locals, you know, the people who actually live and work in Brenham, not just visit for a weekend now and then !! How about bringing in another major grocery store, a department store, clothing stores that have clothes for real size people and you don’t have to pay five kinds of prices for one item !!
That’s what we need. A good example that it can be done is Bastrop, they have a thriving downtown area for the “Tourists” and locals to shop, but they also have major shopping as well.
So until that happens here in Brenham, I will buy Bryan, buy Houston, buy online and say By to Brenham.
I agree with Lifetime Resident!!!
Uhhm…I don’t believe all of those activities are restricted to tourists and visitors. I suspect there will be quite a few locals enjoying the live music, food and drinks on Sunday in downtown Brenham. What these local businesses are trying to do is bring people downtown one Sunday each month for an enjoyable time. Nothing wrong with that.
