BRENHAM P.D. WARNING AGAINST SCAM CALLS

The Brenham Police Department is cautioning people of scam phone calls.

Following a recent surge in reports of scam calls, Brenham Police Captain Lloyd Powell is advising the public of these calls and what to do if they receive one.

Powell says, while these kinds of calls are nothing new to the police department, they have come in greater numbers recently.

These scam calls will pretend to be the IRS, threatening arrest if the victim doesn’t submit payment.  Powell says the caller will then attempt to gather information from the victim, which they would already have if they truly were the IRS.

Scammers use a variety of phone numbers, but many times they will use a local number to fool the victim.

Citizens should report any suspicious phone calls to the Brenham Police Department’s non-emergency line, at 979-277-7373, or to the Federal Trade Commission Complaint Assistant website, at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
