Blinn College women’s soccer trumps Jacksonville, 5-0

Yasmine Cuadra and Ashleigh Rivas lead Blinn’s offense with one goal and one assist each

BRENHAM, Texas — Blinn College women’s soccer players Yasmine Cuadra and Ashleigh Rivas teamed up to lead the offense to a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville College on Thursday afternoon at Cub Stadium.

The win improves Blinn’s overall record to 4-11-1 and conference record to 3-7-1.

“We saw a lot of great things on both sides of the ball today, so that was exciting for us,” said Jorden Smith, Blinn head coach. “It is awesome for our team to go out on a good note here at home. The home crowd came out and was amazing, so this was a nice boost heading into the final game of the season.”

Rivas, Cuadra, Sara Guiberteau, Katherine Rabold and Janay Wilson each scored a goal for the Buccaneers. Rivas, Cuadra, Yadira Grimaldo and Kayla Bonilla all recorded assists in the game.

Cuadra and Rivas found each other in two scoring drives to help lead Blinn to the victory. First Cuadra assisted Rivas for Blinn’s first goal of the game in the 31st minute. Then the roles reversed as Rivas assisted Cuadra in scoring Blinn’s fourth goal in the game in the 49th minute.

“I feel like we were able to come together as a team and communicate more effectively which uplifted everyone’s level of competition,” Cuadra said. “It was really important for us to get the win. We had a rough start this season, but we came out here and finished strong in our final home game.”

Blinn held a 2-0 lead at the half after Bonilla sent a corner kick to Guiberteau, who used a header to score in the 44th minute.

Grimaldo kept the offense rolling in the second half after sending a pass to Rabold for Blinn to score in the 48th minute and lead 3-0. Janay Wilson used a penalty kick to score Blinn’s final goal in the 87th minute.

“Our strength today was being able to come together and score in a variety of ways,” Rivas said. “It was a great win.”

Blinn women’s soccer will conclude the season on the road against Angelina College on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m.

Blinn College men’s soccer tops Jacksonville, 5-0

David Jara scores two goals to lead Blinn’s offense

BRENHAM, Texas — David Jara scored two goals to help lead the Blinn College men’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville College on Thursday afternoon at Cub Stadium.

With the win, the Buccaneers improve to 5-10 overall and 4-9 in Region XIV play.

“It is exciting to see them compete and hit their stride at this point in the season,” said Jorden Smith, Blinn head coach. “This win gives us good momentum moving forward and it is nice to peak at the right moment as we get closer to playoffs.”

Jara led Blinn’s offense with two goals, while Omar Quintana, Johnny Girard and Jose Garcia followed with one goal apiece.

“This win meant a lot to us, especially since this a first-year program and we are so close to going to the playoffs,” Jara said. “We all really worked together and communicated as a team, so this was a great win.”

Farit Ha led the Buccaneers with two assists, while Andres Amaro recorded one assist.

“Ha is an amazing player and is everywhere to setup, assist and score goals,” Jara said.

Ha sparked the offense in the14th minute with a corner kick that allowed Quintana to score Blinn’s first goal. Jara followed with a goal in the 23rd minute and Blinn held a 2-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Jara scored his second goal of the game for Blinn to lead 3-0 in the 56th minute. In the 65th minute, Ha assisted Girard in scoring Blinn’s fourth goal. Amaro delivered a corner kick for Garcia to score in the 72nd minute for the Buccaneers to lead 5-0.

Blinn men’s soccer will conclude the regular season on the road against Angelina College on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
