BURTON ISD EXTENDS SUPERINTENDENT’S CONTRACT THROUGH 2024

The contract of Burton ISD Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy has been extended for one year.

Members of the Burton School Board hold a meeting on January 11th. The meeting was broadcast via Zoom.

Following an executive session at its meeting Monday, the Burton School Board moved unanimously to extend Dr. Kennedy’s contract through June 30, 2024.

Dr. Kennedy’s salary was not acted upon at the meeting, and will be determined during upcoming budget workshops.  Her salary at the time of her last contract extension in January 2020 was $115,169.

Dr. Kennedy became Burton ISD’s superintendent in February 2015, following the retirement of previous superintendent James Palmer in October 2014.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board approved an allotted restriction of four of the six months of operational fund balance towards future district needs.  According to Dr. Kennedy, $260,000 will be taken from the fund balance to address projects, leaving four months of operating in the fund balance.

A total of $224,500 in projects will be addressed with this funding, including $60,000 for technology, $59,000 for the elementary school playground, $27,500 for the baseball and softball field lights, $25,000 for a full school marquee, $20,000 for vestibules, $20,000 to extend the elementary school awning, $8,000 for sealing rock on the Rock Building and installing a roof overhang, and $5,000 for bus repairs.

The board also approved:

  • An order for a school board election for the positions held by Tracey Cox and David Warner, Sr. on May 1st. The board also approved a joint election contract with the City of Burton and appointed election officials.
  • The district and board student outcome goals.
  • A board policy update affecting local policies on cybersecurity, at-will employment, medical treatment and conduct on school premises.
