BURTON ISD MOVING FORWARD WITH FACILITY UPGRADE DISCUSSIONS

Burton ISD is eyeing improvements to several district and campus facilities.

Members of the Burton School Board hold an in-person meeting in March. Trustees met virtually Monday evening.

During her report to the board at its meeting Monday, Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy said a committee has been set up to address facility needs and upgrades across the district.  She acknowledged that the district is “way behind on facilities,” and said district staff are currently meeting to discuss facility upgrades and capital outlay projects.  The board will determine how to move forward with that information as it is presented.

Some of the projects mentioned by Dr. Kennedy included increasing classroom space; HVAC and technology upgrades; improvements to the cafeteria kitchen, band hall, and gym; replacing the baseball and softball stadium lights and improving the restrooms; improving the playground at the elementary school; putting an awning in front of the elementary school to better protect students from weather; general maintenance; and other miscellaneous projects.

Dr. Kennedy said district officials will meet with a financial advisor today (Tuesday) to continue discussion on projects.

Dr. Kennedy also announced the district on Monday received a donation of $895,410 from the estate of Donald Derrick.  In April, a donation of $125,000 was used to set up a scholarship fund in Derrick’s honor for Burton ISD graduates.  Monday’s donation was presented as an additional distribution into the scholarship fund.

After hearing and approving the district’s audit report for 2019-20, trustees went into a board training session.
