CITY OF NAVASOTA REQUESTING VETO OF BILL PREVENTING CITY REGULATION OF BUILDING MATERIALS

The City of Navasota has joined several cities across the state in asking for a veto of a bill which would prevent local governments from setting regulations on building codes and materials.

Monday, the Navasota City Council unanimously approved a resolution requesting Governor Greg Abbott to veto House Bill 2439 when it hits his desk for signature.

The bill would prevent city governments from putting limits or regulations on building products and materials for new construction, as well as changes for residential and commercial buildings. It would also nullify all city ordinances related to use of building products.  Federal and international building codes would still apply.

Navasota’s resolution states that federal building codes are typically less strict than local ordinances, and do not take into account the looks, longevity, quality, and economic impact on a city.

Back in April, the Brenham City Council moved to temporarily ban metal exteriors on residential structures.  City Manager James Fisher said at that meeting this ordinance amendment would allow the city to study the issue of metal housing, and come back with further recommendation by December.

Some of the cities that have voiced their support of a veto are Dallas, McKinney, Smithville, and Bastrop.
