After 35 years of coaching, former Brenham assistant head football coach Tim Oehrlein is calling it a career.

According to the Brownwood Bulletin, Oehrlein, an assistant at Austin-Westlake has announced he is stepping down.

He served as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach and assistant athletic director at Brenham High School from 1998 to 2016, alongside lifelong friend and Brownwood teammate Glen West.

He served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M for their 1985 and ’86 Cotton Bowl teams.

After stints at Lewisville High School and Memorial, Oehrlein joins West’s staff at Kemp High School.

In 1998 the two moved to Brenham, and were joined by another Brownwood teammate, Craig Agnew.  The trio helped lead the Cubs to the UIL State finals three times—the last in 2013.  It remains the Cubs’ only three appearance in the championship game.

Coach Oehrlein receives the 2017 Above and Beyond Award.

He also coached at Brenham with current Brownwood High School head coach Sammy Burnett and Brownwood assistant coaches Brett Mouser and Brian Harris.

Oehrlein was selected as the Greater Houston Area Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013.

In 2017 Oehrlein and the family moved to Austin, where he finished up his career at Austin Westlake High School.  In 2019 the team won the 6A Division II state football championship.

Oehrlein and his wife, Leah, have two sons, Jacob and John, who are both playing college football.  Jacob is now a quarterback at SMU and John is a deep snapper for the University of Arkansas.

Tim and Leah Oehrlein will make their home in San Saba.

  1. I guess the BRENHAM CUBS were really the BROWNWOOD CUBS all along be we never knew it… What a great ending to a long career and the timing couldn’t be better so you can enjoy your kids and attending their games in the future! Good Luck Coach O!
