HARSH SENTENCE FOR DELIVERING COCAINE

A Chappell Hill woman with a history of possessing and distributing illegal drugs was dealt a harsh sentence in this week’s session of the 21st district court.

District Court Judge Reva Towslee-Corbett sentenced 54-year old Allie Christine Howard to eight years in prison after her guilty plea to charges of delivering cocaine. Assistant District Attorney Eric Berg says she could have spent the rest of her life in prison.

The Brenham Police Department’s Fusion Unit arrested Howard after an undercover investigation in July of 2011.

Illegal drug cases dominated this week’s session of the court.

Twenty-year old Derek Mitchell of Brenham was sentenced to four years deferred adjudication probation after his arrest for cocaine possession in September.  Judge Corbett also ordered him to pay a thousand dollar fine and perform 120 hours of community service.

Berg says 41-year old Jonathan Howell Talasek of Bay City ‘clearly did not understand the concept of a designated driver’ after his arrest for cocaine possession in March.  Berg said police stopped Talasek’s car while driving a friend to Austin for a birthday party.  He appeared disoriented and not quite sure where he was.  That prompted a search of the car that found a small amount of cocaine.  Judge Corbett sentenced him to three years deferred adjudication, a $1500 fine and ordered him to perform 120 hours of community service.  She also suspended his driver’s license for two years. The passenger in his car was apparently not inebriated.

Berg says it may be sad but not unusual when teenagers break up but it can become tragic when there is a baby involved.

Berg was referring to the case of Cody Dougherty of Brenham.  Judge Corbett sentenced him to three years deferred adjudication after he assaulted his one-time girlfriend when she wanted to break up with him.  Berg said he assaulted her and tried to choke her.  Judge Corbett also ordered him to pay a $1000 fine and to perform 100 hours of community service.  He must also pay a $100 fee to a family violence center.
