STAR OF THE REPUBLIC MUSEUM TO OFFER ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG VISITORS

Blinn College’s Star of the Republic Museum is connecting children to Texas history with an exciting new summer program.

Each Saturday in June, children of all ages are invited to participate in the “Hands-on History” program, where they can learn the craft behind such skills as knot tying, corn husk dolls, basket-weaving and beading and weaving, all while learning bits of Texas history from museum staff and volunteers.

“We’re thrilled to offer activities designed specifically for children,” said Anne McGaugh, curator of education. “Our goal is to help children get a feel for the way life was in the Texas Republic, and to let them take a piece of hand-made history home with them.”

The “Hands-On History” sessions are available during normal business hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Length of the sessions is dependent on individual museum patrons. There is no additional cost to participate in the sessions, and children are invited to take their crafts home.

  • June 6: Knot Tying
  • June 13: Corn Husk Dolls
  • June 20: Basket-Weaving
  • June 27: Beading and Weaving

Star of the Republic Museum was created by the Texas Legislature and is administered by Blinn College as a cultural and educational institution. Its purpose is to collect and preserve the material culture of the Texas Republic from 1836-1846 and to interpret the history, cultures, diversity, and values of early Texans.

The museum is located off Highway 105 between Brenham and Navasota on FM 1155 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. Daily museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.starmuseum.org or call 936-878-2461, ext. 237.
