BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO CALL ELECTION THURSDAY

  

The Brenham City Council will meet on Thursday to officially call a General Election on May 6th to fill four council positions.

The four positions that are up for election this year are Ward One and Three, as well as At-Large Positions Five and Six. Each position will serve four years on the city council.

The incumbents in those positions are: Ward One, Keith Herring; Ward Three, Andrew Ebel; At-Large Position Five, Mary Barnes-Tilley; and At-Large Position Six, Gloria Nix.

The candidate packets for the positions can be picked up at City Hall, located at 200 West Vulcan Street, Suite 206 during normal operating hours. The period in which candidates can file for a place on the ballot begins this Wednesday and goes through Friday, February 17th.

In other business, the council is expected to accept a resolution regarding civil rights policies in connection with the Church Street Tower rehab project. On September 15, 2016 the City of Brenham accepted a grant in the amount of $275,000 from Texas Department of Agriculture for the Church Street Tower rehabilitation. In order to comply with rules pertaining to the grant, Brenham is required to approve a resolution that states the city will take action to ensure that no person or group is denied benefits such as employment, training, housing, and contracts generated by the grant, on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability. The resolution is a standard requirement for governmental agencies who receive federal grant funds.

The council will also discuss a contract extension for mowing and cleanup serviced for various city departments.

A work session will also take place to discuss and review the 2015-2016 fourth quarter financial report for the city.

The Brenham City Council will meet at 1 p.m. in the second floor council chambers of City Hall.
