CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER PARKING LOT PAVING THURSDAY

The cost to pave a parking lot at the All Sports Building at Brenham’s Hohlt Park is more than twice the amount originally budgeted.

Brenham Public Works Director Dan Rau is requesting approval to spend over $106,000 to pave the parking lot of the All Sports Building, more than twice the original $45,000 estimated cost.  Rau says $15,000 has already been spent on engineering costs for the project.  During this Thursday’s regular meeting of the Brenham City Council, Rau will recommend accepting the low bid of just over $91,000 from Collier Construction.  In explaining the huge discrepancy, Rau says recent spikes in concrete and construction costs caused the project to be much more expensive than he expected.  The Brenham Community Development Corporation (BCDC) is funding the new parking lot from their portion of sales tax receipts.

Also during Thursday’s meeting the City Council will consider adding stop signs on South Saeger Street at its intersection with Old Mill Creek Road.  This would make the intersection, where a new 464-bed student housing facility is being built, a 4-way stop.  Blinn College has issued a letter in support of adding the stop signs on South Saeger Street.

Another item on the agenda deals moving some of the City’s critical facilities and lift stations out of areas that tend to flood.  The Council will consider amending the City’s Hazard Mitigation Plan to propose spending $1.2 million to elevate or relocate those facilities that are near special flood hazard or flood prone areas.

A pair of organizations are requesting noise variances for music to be played during upcoming Juneteenth celebrations at City parks.  The Washington County Historical Juneteenth Association is planning to have music at Fireman’s Park on Friday, June 15th from 7:00 ‘til 11:00 p.m., and on Saturday, June 16th from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The Brenham Outlaws are requesting a noise variance for their Juneteenth celebration at Hattie Mae Flowers Park on Saturday, June 16th from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Thursday’s regular meeting of the Brenham City Council will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Council chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall.  Earlier that day, the Council hold a special meeting at 9:00 a.m. in conference room 2-A to begin pre-budget planning for fiscal year 2018-2019.
